Greetings from the State Floodplain Management Office!
So much activity, as usual, keeps us busy around the state. We’re pleased to tell you that we’ve hired a third floodplain management specialist to serve you—his name is Ed Aquino, hailing from Clearwater, Florida. Ed’s deep experience with construction (he was formerly a certified building official and contractor) will give us more ability to assist you with building related standards and technical matters.
Of course Steve, Katie and Richard are also ready to help you with mapping questions, ordinance review, program implementation, unique local floodplain issues and other technical items as needed. Note: Congratulations to Katie, who has received her ASPFM Certification as a Floodplain Manager! We encourage every community to support this level of commitment as much as possible. FFMA has coordinated another L-273 course in Lee County in September, so hopefully more of you can attend and take the CFM exam on 9/16 there.
We were pleased to receive the 2011 ASFPM Tom Lee State Award for Excellence this past spring—the re-establishment of the state floodplain management program has been hard work but so rewarding. Thank you all for your part in this achievement! We couldn’t have done it without FFMA’s dedication and support.
In March 2012, Florida’s updated Building Code will officially include the 2009 ICC flood-resistant standards for construction. We are feverishly developing training that will be carried out across the state for building officials and floodplain managers to better understand how this impacts your local work. Additionally, we’re near draft stage of the companion-to-the-code model ordinance, which will begin to replace or help modify existing ordinances over time. More on this as the pieces fall into place.
Lastly, in spite of reduced budgets, national program reform activity, and so many other disasters to attend to, FEMA Region IV has begun to actively press the Risk MAP program into all aspects of their work, from mapping to mitigation. This holistic perspective will be applied to everything as we move forward, and the state floodplain office is committed to supporting you as much as possible in your Risk MAP efforts.
Please remember that for floodplain issues, you can contact us at 850-413-9960 or via floods@em.myflorida.com. For questions about the flood mitigation grant programs, please contact Shannon Hamilton at 850-487-0935 or shannon.hamilton@em.myflorida.com —she’ll direct you to the grant specialist assigned to your area. For more information about mitigation planning, please contact Laura Herbert at 850-922-5580 or laura.herbert@em.myflorida.com.
Stay safe and dry for the rest of the summer!
